While the Tower of Power Horns sexily punctuate the gritty Memphis beat of "Give It Up," Sam Cardon's keyboards and Mike Dowdle's sinuous wah-wah guitar are like a serious massage on the shoulders.
Cardon is a strong composer as well as a thoughtful player, as displayed on the next track: "Acquainted With the Night" recreates the contemplative stillness of deep night, featuring a beautifully conceived, acoustic piano solo from Sam. "Heliopolis" cooks from the One, thanks to sizzling percussive interplay between Dave Weckl and Brad Dutz, and a burning alto spot from guest saxophonist Brandon Fields.
Where the radio-friendly "I Wish" weaves an otherworldly spell that enchants, the title track boasts blistering electric guitar from Grant Geissman. John Hancock's rhythm arrangement on "Last Night of Summer" tickles the ear like a light July rain. Guest Randy Waldman's keyboard punches on "Los Quattros Cuadros" are deadly, especially in conjunction with Sheila E.'s roiling percussion work. Cardon gets "Déjà vu ja vu" all to himself, painting from an impressive palette of colors and moods, and the penultimate "Mojo" sets the rapturous Tower of Power Horns to some uplifting space funk. This is one of the finest "Contempo" releases of the year.

- Larry Nai

JazzFusion.com Review

Frank Macek's - Contemporary Jazz & New Age Music Website
Sam Cardon's has released his first jazz album in 9 years, Digability.
